Game Concept
In Desert Order you’re taking control over your own battle group of armored vehicles. Once you’ve conquered your first stronghold, you begin to realize that you are not alone in the shifting sands of the desert. Rivals lurk everywhere and only those that manage to fortify their bases and build up a strong economy, will eventually stand the time of time that awaits all those that want to climb to the top in Desert Order.
Your stronghold is your safe haven:
In the blistering hot desert many dangers await all those that came unprepared. This is where your stronghold comes into play. Your stronghold is your safe haven, your place to go when you have to relax and repair your units after hard fought battles and it is also the place in which you produce additional units to support you in your endeavors. To maintain and potent strike force you need lots of resources like oil, steel and even concrete. Your safe haven has the foundations and required deposits but that is also part of the reason why it is of utmost importance to keep your stronghold protected. Building heavy turrets and strong fortifications are only some of the precautions you should consider whenever you’re deciding to lead your army to places where it cannot immediately return to defend your stronghold.
Monstrosities made of steel:
Once you made sure that you have a steady income of resources, it is time to invest them into new toys. What kind of toys? Well, how about: most of them? While initially you’re only controlling lightly armored vehicles, the tables will turn eventually. Once you began upgrading your stronghold a bit, stronger and more refined types of war machinery will unlock. The possibilities are nearly endless. Aside from heavy battle tanks, the game offers a broad selection of air units, ships and a total sum of dozens of unique units. In this regard it should be mentioned that some units do perform better or worse against some other types of units. Your slow artillery pieces for example shouldn’t be leave unattended in the field – especially not when a unit of fast-paced tank destroyers emerges. Therefore it is highly recommended to play around the strengths and weaknesses of your units, forming a battle group that is not only-well rounded but can also adapt to task at hand.
Meet powerful allies:
To be fair, life in the starting area has been relatively chill. We had plenty of time to settle down, invest into a few upgrades and play around with the units we still had left from our initial encounters. Once we left that starting area though, we realized that others started to scout our stronghold. Their target was clear – our resources. Why earn them yourself, when you can simply raid someone and take his stuff? A logic we could get behind. Before the impending doom hit us though, we joined a relatively strong alliance and made powerful friends in the vicinity. Suddenly we were the one who dictated what happened to the surrounding bases and should anyone decide to attack us, the retaliation would’ve been devastating. Aside from the social aspect, we really enjoyed the tactics that you gain access to when playing with others. Especially in terms of mixing different types of units, you have so much more leeway, because another player can jump in and assist you with his forces, helping you out when push comes to shove.

Conclusion
While this game is visually slightly dated, the gameplay itself is not. Desert Order provides absolutely solid strategy gameplay, underlined with a wide selection of different war machines from the past 80 years. Taking over your first base, upgrading it and eventually commanding your own powerful battlegroups feels not only rewarding but also challenging. Desert Order is also a game that wants you to cooperate with others, which consequently results in massive combat scenarios, in which two or more powerful alliances charge into each other, sending shockwaves of steel and thunder through the shifting sands.
